"In a 20 September 2007 memorandum for the Army's principal officials, the Secretary of the Army, the Honorable Pete Geren, reaffirmed the Army's 'longstanding support' for the Army Heritage and Education Center (AHEC) and its archives, educational programs, and the 'first-class museum.'
The Secretary's memorandum also noted that the AHEC campus 'will play an important role in honoring our Army's Soldiers and their Families.' The campus is being developed to honor the service and sacrifice of Soldiers and their families by sharing their personal stories; to preserve and make available for study artifacts and archival materials; and to educate and inspire visitors.
In a departure from previous guidance regarding the AHEC, last week's memorandum no longer identified the AHEC as a component of the National Museum of the United States Army (NMUSA), which is slated to be constructed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Rather, the Army now considers the AHEC as a separate entity while remaining an important complement to the NMUSA and the Army's history program.
Las week the Army also released a new regulation regarding military history responsibilities, policies, and procedures. In addition to charging the AHEC with educating a broad audience on the heritage of the Army, the regulation also identified the four primary components of the AHEC--Military History Institute, Army Heritage Museum, Visitor and Education Services, and Collection Management.
The development of the 56-acre AHEC campus along Army Heritage Drive in Carlisle, Pennsylvania is a unique public-private initiative supported by the United States Army, the COmmonwealth of Pennsylvania, local governments, private citizens, corporations and foundations, and the Army Heritage Center Foundation. The Army Heritage Center Foundation is a membership-based, non-profit organization located on the AHEC campus charged with raising the private funds necessary to construct the Visitor and Education Center and the Army Heritage Museum and to enhance the AHEC's educational and outreach programs."
