"The Army Heritage Center Foundation is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a grant of $125,763 because of the efforts of Senator Arlen Specter, Congressman Todd Platts (R-19), and Congressman Bill Shuster (R-9) who worked with other legislators to ensure funds were included in the appropriations bill for the Department of Labor, Health and Human Services and the Department of Education.
The grant, administered through the U.S. Department of Education Funds for the Improvement of Education, will be used by the Foundation to enhance educational opportunities at the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (USAHEC) in Cumberland Country for college students majoring in history and education. Specifically, the funding will enable the students to expand the development of teaching tools for classroom use and visits to the USAHEC and will provide funding to conduct teacher workshops based on USAHEC holdings.
Using the theme, "Voices of the Past Speak to the Future," the Foundation;s efforts support National and State Standards for the Teaching of History. The Foundation provides professional development hours for Pennsylvania educators and is acknowledged as an educational improvement agency within the Commonwealth's Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program.
The Foundation supports the construction and development of the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center on its 56 acre complex in Middlesex Township. The USAHEC currently consists of the Army's Military History Institute and the Army Heritage Trail. Future expansion plans include the Visitor and Education Center and the Army Heritage Museum.
The USAHEC provides invaluable services to school children and educators as well as military scholars and historians both nationally and internationally."
