The Ruth Internship Endowment was created to offer a student enrolled in a Pennsylvania university the opportunity to research the collections of the Army Heritage and Education Center, the nation’s premier archival facility for the U.S. Army’s unofficial records. The endowment was established by Foundation Board member, Christopher Gleason, in recognition of the Army services of Mr. Gleason’s father-in-law and brother-in-law. Robert L. Ruth was a veteran of World War II and Robert C. Ruth served in Vietnam. Wallace is writing his doctoral dissertation on the Union Army’s occupation the areas along the Mississippi River during the Civil War. Wallace’s goal during the internship is to look at the military department of Mississippi’s role within the state and identify the locations of units assigned to the area. He will then explore military occupation in its political and strategic policy dimensions and its impact on Mississippi society. Wallace had already planned on researching this topic at the Army Heritage and Education Center (AHEC) since his academic advisor, Dr. Carol Reardon, has extensively used AHEC resources for her publications. The Ruth Endowment is giving him the opportunity to do so earlier and for a longer time than he expected. His research at AHEC will lead him to other archives but he expects to return regularly as his research develops. The materials provided by AHEC are important to Wallace and he views this internship as a perfect opportunity to start his dissertation. “I have found, with the help of the people here, a lot of material and a lot of direction for where my research needs to go. I’ve used a lot of Soldiers’ diaries, Soldiers’ letters to and from home and regimental histories,” says Wallace. Mr. Wallace expects to complete his dissertation, defend it at Penn State and receive his doctoral degree by 2012.
