Description
In World War II the U.S. Army Signal Corps fielded only 13 pigeon companies. These companies had a combined strength of 3,000 soldiers and 54,000 pigeons.
Of these pigeon companies the 282nd compiled an outstanding record of achievement. It was the only pigeon company to participate in the Normandy Campaign, and it was the only one in the European Theater of Operations that was awarded a Meritorious Service Unit Commendation. It also was the only pigeon company that participated in all of the 12th Army Group’s five campaigns and consequently was awarded five battle stars. Organic to the U.S. First Army Headquarters, the 282nd not only supported U.S. combat units but also worked with partisans and civilians in France, and particularly in France.
This book is well-written, lively in its prose, well-documented, and thorough in its discussion of a little-known Army organization that provided vital communications support contributing to Allied victory in Europe.
