Description
Bryan Perrett tells the story of two regular regiments – the fourth and seventh RTR and two territorial regiments – the 42nd and 44th RTR. It is a story in which great courage of crews is only matched by their professionalism and a story of men who won unparalleled victories when their country was facing defeat.
The opening chapter concerns the use of both the Matilda I (A11) as well as the more familiar Matilda II (A12) with the BEF in France and perhaps most specifically the Arras counter-attack and it makes for fascinating reading. The action then switches to North as well as East Africa with particular detail on the Matilda IIs employment during Operation Battleaxe, the siege of Tobruk and Operation Crusader. Whilst anyone looking for its operational use in the far east will have to look elsewhere this is probably the best and most detailed account of British AFVs in action in this early war period (aside for Perrett’s other excellent book in the same vein on the Valentine infantry tank).
