Reluctant Policemen: Army Officers Aiding Civil Government during Jacksonian Era Political Violence
Between the 1830s and the Civil War, army officers sometimes advised or assisted in domestic law enforcement in eastern cities, whether to deter violations and law, and potential violence, of which the best example is the 1832 Nullification Crisis in South Carolina, or amid rioting or threats of violence usually rooted in political disputes among white citizens. They usually did so hesitantly, and this webinar will suggest why.
