Description

In April 1977 the publishing world was taken by surprise by the publication in London and New York of David Irving’s book, Hitler’s War, the way of describing such a great historical event as World War II was unique – almost as if it were narrated by one of its dictatorial protagonists. The publication is based on any last records found, including the diaries of Hermann Göring and Hitler’s notorious doctor Theo Morell. Also presented for the first time are color, dramatic photographs taken by Hitler’s filmmaker, Walter Frentz. This latest edition has another merit: It contains the long-lost Gestapo interrogation records of Rudolf Hess’s inner circle, now privately owned, as well as signals intercepted by the British. “Anything Hitler did not order or notice is not mentioned in this book,” says the author. “The narrative of events unfolds in the same order that Hitler dealt with them.” The first thing the reader learns about any attempts made against Hitler’s life is the fact of the explosion of the bomb, which Count von Stauffenberg placed under the table at the Führer’s Headquarters. The author’s technique is unusual, but most often it succeeds. The book sold 25,000 copies in its first edition in Great Britain and has since been republished and translated repeatedly. It is now an approved textbook of the West Point and Sandhurst Military Schools and an important manual for many University Libraries around the world, due to the plethora of documents it contains, which other historians have not been able to locate.
