Description

Saint Michael and the Dragon gets at the monstrous thing itself — what war as such is like, what happens to human beings when they play at war and find that it strips them not only of comfort and pleasure and decency but of feeling and of humanity itself. Pierre Leulliette wrote about the Algerian War because he happened to enlist in it as a volunteer paratrooper. he was hopeful of finding a chance for adventure, excitement, service. It is lucky that he kept a soldier’s journal. The landscape and manscape Leulliette describes are those of Algeria in the first three years of the war, from November 1954 t late 1957. This is a rare book, vivid, precise, deeply felt, unflinchingly depicted. You can read this book as the story of the dehumanizing wrought by war. But don’t forget the affirmation of life which is all the more triumphant when set beside the idiocy of war.
