Description

This book deals with the policies of the United States towards the countries in Eastern Europe. It represents an attempt to apply some of the many general explanations of the Cold War to the affairs of a limited, yet crucial area. The study combines elements from traditionalist writings with others from so-called revisionist historians. The American course of action is described as a non-policy, an uneasy mixture of ambition and strength on the one hand and weakness and the need to put first things first on the other. The author finds no single idea which alone can explain America’s policies. Strategic, economic and democratic interests all played their part. Several trends of thought have something to contribute to a richer understanding of the contradictory influences which constituted the policies of the United States towards Eastern Europe. This study tries to strike a balance between these various elements.
