The Army of the Fifth Republic is the first full-scale consideration of the efforts of Charles de Gaulle, the army’s choice in 1958, to restore civilian control of the military in France. It is also the first attempt to evaluate the army’s role in returning de Gaulle to power and his use of the army toward that end.
